{"id":1302,"date":"2017-09-01T12:00:12","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T17:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rx-edge.com\/blog\/?p=1302"},"modified":"2017-09-01T12:20:14","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T17:20:14","slug":"its-the-vibe-of-the-thing-your-honour-dennis-denuto-the-castle-1997","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.instephealth.com\/blog\/its-the-vibe-of-the-thing-your-honour-dennis-denuto-the-castle-1997\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIt\u2019s the vibe of the thing, your Honour\u201d Dennis Denuto, The Castle 1997"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m guessing that not many people have seen the 1997 Australian movie \u201cThe Castle\u201d \u2013 so you\u2019ll just have to trust me that \u201cIt\u2019s the vibe of the thing, your Honour\u201d is one of the most memorable quotes from one of my favorite movies!\u00a0 The \u201cvibe\u201d that the Dennis Denuto character is talking about is an all-encompassing feeling, a sweeping emotion, and a certain special quality.<\/p>\n<p>At last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacds.org\/\">NACDS<\/a>\u00a0Total Store Expo, the \u201cvibe of the thing\u201d was the energy around health, wellness, and patient care.\u00a0 At this annual gathering of pharma manufacturers and pharmacy retailers, the evidence was everywhere, from the exhibit floor to the education sessions to the executive presentations.\u00a0 Colin Powell, in his inspiring presentation as a featured speaker, was definitely part of the vibe, commending pharmacy\u2019s ability to \u201ctake care of your fellow citizens, help them when they\u2019re in need\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0\u201cWhere do you go first?\u00a0 The pharmacy\u201d.<\/h2>\n<p>Those were the words of Alex Gourlay in his remarks during the opening session, citing the pharmacy\u2019s importance in the treatment continuum.\u00a0 Mr. Gourlay, who is the co-chief operating officer of Walgreens Boots Alliance, emphasized the critical function of pharmacists due to their proximity to the patient coupled with their ever-expanding scope of practice.\u00a0 One example of this expanding scope: \u00a0pharmacists now have limited prescribing privileges in 18 states.\u00a0 He also pointed out that with the continued physician shortage in the U.S., pharmacists will become increasingly incorporated into direct patient care. His assertion that \u201cpharmacy and the pharmacist are at the heart of the Walgreens philosophy\u201d underscored his company\u2019s commitment to providing convenient healthcare and helping their customers lead healthier lives.<\/p>\n<p>When we weren\u2019t meeting with pharma clients or retailers, many on our team had a chance to attend the numerous Insight Sessions on topics ranging from pharmacy-performed TB testing to reducing hospital readmission rates:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rx-edge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1309 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.rx-edge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01-e1504285113305-1024x516.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.instephealth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01-e1504285113305-1024x516.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.instephealth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01-e1504285113305-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/www.instephealth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01-e1504285113305-768x387.png 768w, https:\/\/www.instephealth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01-e1504285113305-150x76.png 150w, https:\/\/www.instephealth.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NACDS-blog-01-e1504285113305-700x353.png 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Matching health and wellness services to consumers\u2019 priorities<\/h2>\n<p>Andrew Mandzy, Director of Strategic Insights at Nielsen, opened his presentation about The Health and Wellness Consumer with a slide that said it all \u201cHealth is not simply the absence of sickness\u201d.\u00a0 He went on to talk about the ways that consumers\u2019 entire definition of health is very different from the past.\u00a0 They are more conscious of costs and more open to alternative channels for care and health maintenance. He pointed out that the key health and wellness drivers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #5b87da;\"><strong>Americans are more focused on health and wellness<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 they are eating healthier, exercising more, seeing a doctor<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #5b87da;\"><strong>An aging population <\/strong><\/span><strong>\u2212<\/strong> baby boomers are seeking more fiber, heart-healthy products, vitamins\/minerals, and antioxidants<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increase in chronic diseases <\/strong><strong>\u2212<\/strong> almost 4 in 10 households suffer from a chronic ailment that requires an Rx and\/or OTC.\n<ul>\n<li>74% of those with chronic conditions <strong>would prefer to fill their prescriptions at pharmacies <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ailment management impacts the entire store<\/strong> \u2013 not only the pharmacy counter but also the OTC\/personal care areas, center-store, and perimeter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #5b87da;\"><strong>Rising healthcare costs <\/strong><\/span><strong>\u2212<\/strong> consumers are increasingly conscious of out-of-pocket costs and are feeling the pinch\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fewer doctors means people are turning to proactive self-care and other HCPs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Retailers are providing a path, including increasing healthcare-related services and providing relevant health information and education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #5b87da;\"><strong>Demand for transparency <\/strong><\/span><strong>\u2212<\/strong> people are paying closer attention to the ingredients in their foods as well as in other products like vitamins and personal care items.
